Fortune: “Fortuna”

“Prepare for a positive change of fortune. A run of bad luck will end. Know the difference between chance and action.  You can change your luck. Be prepared – when fortune meets opportunity, success results!

Wish for me a coin of gold.

Lady Fortuna, please give to me.

I pray to you to change my luck,

Fortune’s Favourite I will be.

 

Oh hard to woo, Fortuna smiles,

Her sweetest and most complicated one.

Our expectations not premeditated

We cannot trust that her gift will come.

Sometimes, I think human nature has changed a great deal in the last few thousand years – until I read ancient history! Historical witchcraft techniques seem just as concerned with invoking love, money, health, and luck as modern spell craft. Evidently, these aspects of life are at the heart of human desires – and no less today than in Aradia’s time.

In Stregoneria, luck is sometimes referred to as ‘fortune.’ There is even a female deity called ‘Fortuna,’ to whom we link our more modern ‘Lady Luck.’ Good fortune is a wonderful – even if temporary – gift. It brings us greater opportunities, more success in games and at work, and attracts more prosperity to us, as well. In times of hardship, we would like Fortuna to smile upon us, so there are many spells, incantations, and prayers to achieve her positive notice in any strega’s spell book.

I particularly love this spell from Leyland’s Aradia: Gospel of the Witches. (According to the account from which is comes, it involves a lemon stuck full of pins of different colours – avoid black pins!)

First, with three drops of oil I do remove

All evil influences and I humbly pray,

O beautiful Diana, until thee

That thou wilt take it all away from me,

And send it all to my worst enemy!

 

When the evil fortune

Is taken from me,

I’ll cast it out to the middle of the street:

And if thou wilt grant me this favour

O beautiful Diana,

Every bell in my house shall merrily ring!”*

Ok I will admit it, I had to think about this one for a minute… did I want to even post it? Is it the message I wanted to put out there? Well, the cards are really just a direction, chosen by the angels for what I am to write about today. And today, I want to tell you that we make our own luck. I am so much more a believer in raising our vibration to that which we wish to create than I am a believer in the fickle nature of Lady Luck. However, on that note, it is extremely important to note that I am a big believer than when we truly do believe that we have her on our side… we simply cannot lose. Powerful those thoughts and feelings we create, are they not?

So, how lucky are you feeling today? How much energy are you going to put into feeling fortunate or not so fortunate… as these are both self fulfilling prophecies! Do you put energy into a certain person, place, or thing? Such as a special piece of jewelry or a favourite item of clothing? For example, in my 20’s, I used to have a dress that I felt held an incredible amount of positive luck for me. Whenever I wore that dress, good things happened! I got free food or drinks, met up unexpectedly with old friends, attracted positive attention and generally had the best night ever whenever I chose to wear it! Eventually it disappeared along the way… (possibly nabbed by an old roomie who knew the power of the dress… alas, not so lucky after all!!)

Anyhow, my point is, if you have something lucky, get it out. Take it with you today and see what happens! Luck is on your side, whether you believe it is held within you, within Lady Fortuna herself, or within a lucky item that you possess. Today, and this weekend, you simply cannot lose. So decide that right now and go have an amazing time! It’s in the cards ;0)
