Dionysus: “Freedom”

The Myth: “Dionysus is the son of Zeus and the mortal Semele. While Semele was pregnant with Dionysus, Hera, disguised as an old woman, convinced Semele to make Zeus prove he was a god. Semele asked Zeus to swear an unbreakable oath to grant her a favor. He agreed, and was thus forced to reveal his true nature when she demanded it. Zeus appeared as a bolt of lightning, and its fire consumed Semele. Zeus saved Dionysus by sewing him into his thigh until it was time for him to be born, giving Dionysus two births.

Dionysus is the wise god of nature, vegetation, wine and music. He embodies the ecstasy and intoxication of unity and the dissolving of barriers. He is known as the liberator, freeing humankind from the chains of the mundane through music, wine, madness and ecstasy.

The Message: “Ecstasy is the transcendence of the ordinary state. It is an altered state of consciousness, a type of trance that moves us beyond our own self-awareness into a unified awareness. This state heightens our thought processes, intensifies our emotions, expands our spiritual awareness, and enhances our physical abilities. Dionysus instigates the trance that ushers us into his realm of ecstatic awareness.

Dionysus represents the freedom of the senses and the liberation of the civil and dutiful mind. His appearance in your cards signifies a deep connection to art, music and poetry and points you toward obtaining freedom through catharsis.

If your life has become overwhelmed by mundane routine, though and existence, Dionysus is here to shake you awake. This is the time for freeing your senses and finding your true voice, your dance. It is a time to break free from the rules of the civil world, to find your own way instead.

If you have drawn this card, liberation is at hand. the key to this liberation will come through deep catharsis – an intense, climactic, emotional experience that leaves you feeling renewed, revitalized, and reborn. The experience will smash the psychological barriers that bind you – the experience of religious or spiritual ecstasy, the total experience of unity with all that is, the ecstatic experience of god within and without.”*

Our society has a twisted sense of ecstasy. As soon as you hear the word, what do you think of? The drug? Illicit sex? Hedonism? It’s all gone sideways and our minds are so used to being in the gutter it’s hard to imagine another realm of reality.

Yet, what if the most pure form or ecstasy is found within our deep connection to the Divine? Is that not what the ancient Guru’s sought in the caves high in the Himalayan mountains? The ecstasy that could only be found when the ego mind was surpassed and our Souls reached out to touch Source energy itself? Ecstasy is not a quickie, it’s not a fast distraction away from responsibility. It can’t be found in a meaningless connection. Ecstasy is the greatest gift we are given; the ability to open ourselves up and receive Unconditional Love.

Ecstasy is stepping past the feeling of stagnancy and lethargy. It is being fully awake and fully aware, present, alive. It is feeling the beat of the music of life with your whole being and all of your senses. It is about throwing yourself into your life with passion and inspiration.

So how do we find it here? We find it through joy and lightness of Being. We find it in Love, both given and received. Not in empty physical connection, but true, heart centered loving sacred union; or through the strength of the bonds love that we feel for our family, pets and friends. We find it when we are passionate about a cause, when we truly step onto our Soul path and become of service. Through refusing to repeat a pattern ad nauseum in our lives, but learning and moving forward. It’s about releasing habits and limiting belief systems, taking risks and opening up to opportunity. It is about grasping life by the horns and riding it wildly, even if that is completely out of character!

Stir things up. Get sensual in your creative self-expression. Get out of your box and fly free for a while. You deserve it, and it will do you a world of good.

Namaste
