The Myth: “Zeus feared that his first wife, Metis, whose name means wisdom, would bear a son who would overthrow him. Zeus swallowed Metis when she was pregnant with Athena. Despite his effort, Athena sprang fully grown from Zeus’s head, dressed in her war armor and shimmering gold, holding a sharp spear.

Athena is the virgin goddess of wisdom and appears in many myths, planning strategies for wars and guiding heroes toward their goals. Her ability to see things from a higher perspective allows her to choose the best course of action.

Athena and Poseidon competed to become the patron deity of what would become Athens. Poseidon created a spring that brought water and trade, but it was salty and not good for drinking. Athena created the domesticated olive tree, which gave the Athenians food, wood, and oil. Her gift was by far the wiser and more fruitful, and she became the patron of Athens, which was named in her honour. This example illustrates how Athena used her ability to see the bigger picture to achieve her desired outcome.”

The Message: “Athena represents clarity and balance of mind. It may be time for you to stop and take stock of your life. You may need to put feelings to the side and closely review your current situation. You may need to journal, meditate, or go for a long walk in order to obtain clarity.

Athena helps heroes win battles, but only through intelligence, clarity, foresight, and wisdom. This is a time to be smart, and wisdom only comes when the heart and the mind are in balance. If you feel muddled, overwhelmed, or frustrated, it is time to stop engaging in the dramas of your exterior life so that you can see what is really occurring and discover how to move forward and defeat the monsters of your inner life. This is a time to face yourself calmly and honestly , so that the guiding light of clarity can see you through to the next phase in your life.”*

Yesterday we were granted the supreme protection of Isis. Today we are blessed with the wisdom of Athena. Now that we are protected by powerful warrior energies, it is time to dig deep and find our inner resources. It takes much more than brute strength to win a battle, we must use the power of our minds. Both Goddesses can contribute to our clarity of thought, our decisiveness and our ability to tap into our vision and strength of character, where true battles are won.

We are being asked to look at things in a new and different way. We are reminded that each of us is on our own journey and we cannot interfere with the journey of another. We can provide support and guidance, just as the Divine can offer us, but we cannot live their lives for them. Maybe we have been a bit judgmental. Maybe we have been withholding love from someone in an effort to teach them a lesson. Maybe we have been sucked into playing a game we didn’t want to play. Maybe we have convinced ourselves of something that deep down we know is simply not true.

All that must be released. The slate must be cleared so that new ideas can form. There is a new way to see this situation, but we must be open to it.

Athena is the goddess of wisdom and strategy. She is not intimidated. She is not easily influenced. She does not react with emotion, but steps back to gain perspective, considering the bigger picture. She makes a plan of action. We are being urged to do the same. Refuse to get caught up in the drama. See things from a broader perspective. Strive for the highest good instead of personal gain. Take a break from the situation until you can think clearly and move forward in the best possible way.
