Daily Angel Oracle Card: The Hierophant, from the Shadowscapes Tarot, by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law, artwork by Barbara Moore
The Hierophant: “I would like a story,” says the salamander to the Hierophant.
“And what would you like to hear, little one?” The words come slowly. Each syllable seems to be drawn from deep within, pulled up from an individual rootlet. The salamander is used to it, and patient.
“I want to hear how I may fly. I was content. And then one day, my friend Caterpillar said he was sleepy. He slept for a long time, until I nearly forgot about him – until yesterday. A moth came to laugh at me. He laughed with Caterpillar’s laugh, and with Caterpillar’s voice he said he had had a dream of wings.”
“Ah.” The sonorous exhalation seems to go on forever. “Ah, little one; I am sorry. Caterpillar has that blessing. He may sleep and dream of flight. He weaves a silken ritual around his body, and then comes the day when that vision transforms him. You…”
“I wish to dream of flight too!” says Salamander, very seriously.
“You may dream of it, ” says his friend and teacher. “I will not be the one to deny you divinity. But just know that your own divinity shall be attained along a different path than Caterpillar’s. Do not relinquish your dream, Salamander.”
Meaning Of The Card: “The Hierophant’s roots reach deep, entwined around secrets and traditions and the ages. He believes in ritual and ceremony, in pursuing knowledge and deeper meaning, and in the rigidity of a belief system. He elucidates the spiritual and brings it to the earthly plane. He is calm and in possession of himself, and he is the teacher who can help unravel mysteries.”*

We each have our own unique destiny. Our own gifts to discover and share. Our own way of being in the world.
Sometimes these gifts lie undiscovered for longer than necessary as we strive to be someone we clearly are not. Hoping, wishing and praying to be inside someone else’s skin… living someone else’s life as if it is our own. Comparison… the greatest distraction of all time. The fastest way to get off track. Often a clear path to feelings of hopelessness, envy, and disillusion… or worse, superiority.
There’s a reason why you came where you came to in this lifetime on this planet at this particular time. A reason for looking how you look, knowing what you know and possessing the special skills that are unique to you. It’s no mistake that you are who you are.
The mistake is not owning it. Not relishing it. Not diving into it with all you’ve got.
Not that we are encouraged to do this in our society. Nope, quite the opposite actually. We are led to believe there is a hierarchy. Some people are “better” because of what they own or what they look like or how their bodies… (or occasionally even how their brains) work. They are celebrated… celebrities right? We are taught to dress a certain way (fashionable, whatever that may mean), look a certain way (young and buff generally). Blend into society unless we can be the 1% that stands out.
But alas, as the world shifts of course all that is changing. Already doesn’t it feel so superficial you can hardly stand it? Good. That’s a start.
So what’s so special about you? Well everything, don’t you agree? Not special in a superior way, special in an “Of Service” kind of way. A stand on your own and be you kind of way.
Embrace that. Embody it. Stop trying to be what you are not, and put everything into what you are. From the very center of your being.
