Strega: “Pythonissa”

“You have power – it is real. Do not fear what you do not understand, but, rather, seek to understand it. Weave your magic everywhere you go. You can create something from nothing.

I am the weaver.

I make something from nothing,

Hated and loved, misunderstood,

Potions made, herbs a crushing.

There is The Way,

The method, the magic.

Let me teach you the healing,

The incantations fantastic.

“Strega,” which in English means “witch,” refers to one who is a weaver of magic. “Streghe” is plural for “strega,” and magara and maga are other Italian terms for witch.

Folklore tells of women (and sometimes man) who were the healers of their villages. These wise folk offered curse for hearth, heath, and the health of animals and ensured the fertility and receptivity of the land. In some villages, wise women also blessed newborn babies, watched over marriages and funerals, and performed the duties of midwife and matchmaker.

By the 1300s, though, the reputation of those following the old ways began to suffer under the  spread of Christianity and the witch hunts began. At about the same time, new kinds of remedies were being introduced – and only men were permitted to practice this new medicine. Now, rather than having their worth as healers appreciated, streghe – who were often blamed for deaths of newborns, for blighting the farmland, and for causing destructive weather systems – were maligned and in some cases, shamed and chased away.

Today, streghe practice stregoneria, a modern witchcraft with some basis in ancient Italian folklore and witchcraft. Streghe claim that some of their practices date back to Etrucan times. Wihle they also recognize the contributions of Medieval witchcraft and more recent Wiccan practices to their craft, through the streghe, Aradia’s word still lives on and the practices she taught continue to grow and be passed on.”*

So many labels we use to describe people and their customs and ways. What if we were to get rid of all that and just appreciate people for the gifts they offer us, the Light they possess and the natural talents that make them unique? What if we saw each other as extensions of ourselves, and the sacred practices of others as their contribution to society. Instead of being labeled a witch, shaman or even medicine man or woman, we could just be someone who willingly offers healing to those who need it. We could listen to what they have to share with an open heart and an open mind, knowing that they will do their best with the tools they have to heal us.

We can see each others as equals, without judgment, without competition and without assessing value based on money but on willingness to share. We could appreciate people by giving them what they need in return for their service to us. Who would win then? The banks and large corporations? Or everyone? Certainly food for thought. Yes we all need to make a living, yes we all have responsibilities and bills to pay, and yes that whole system hinges on how much money we can work hard to earn. But maybe, in the spaces between, we can start a different system until it replaces the old.

Cuz we all know that the Universe will always provide. Abundance is ours. Anything is possible. And that Love will rule over money one day.

Yes it will.

Heal and be healed.

The Unknown

The Unknown: “Ignota”

“No one person can know everything. The void can be a comfortable place – and one of profound creativity. Make sure to rest during busy times. We need to create space to heal or to make big decisions. It is okay not to know. Move forward fearlessly and trust in our own in your own innate wisdom.”

“When all falls apart,
Space opens up.
Courage and trust
Must fill our cup.

The void is not dark,
Yet our shadows and fears
All swirl and rise up,
Then our wisdom appears.”

“It is nice to know there are still things that are unknown, isn’t it? Or do you not agree? We have always had both a fear of, and a curiosity about, the unknown. we fear what we do not understand – which is natural, because our earliest survival as a species depended on our knowledge of our surroundings. But that survival instinct has evolved in ways that may not always serve us today. In our search for scientific certainty, we can scrutinize ever smaller details until we lose sight of the magic that exists in the whole of which those details are only a part.

Our society prides itself on knowing – and knowing now! We carry phones, tablets, and computers around with us that can spew out a multitude of answers to any question on demand. Information is so prevalent that we may feel anxious if we are not able to explain a new idea or a more subtle feeling on the spot. But in my opinion, there is still a place for the unknown, for the power of the void in our world.

Aradia reminds us how awe-inspiring mystery can be – witchcraft, for example. Yet, if asked how witchcraft works, some might say that it is just a form of self-hypnosis. In their haste to label witchcraft in a way that makes it easy for them to explain, they would have forgotten to consider all that we do not now about the factors that comprise the craft – among them, the potency of ritual and intention and synergy. I believe that Aradia, if asked how witchcraft works, would simply smile and say, ‘All in all, we do not need to know how it works – we just need to know that it does!’

In magic, we consider the dark moon (the night before the new moon appears, when it looks as if there is no moon in the sky at all) ‘the void’, which we could also call ‘the unknown’. It is a period of great gentleness, a time when any thing is possible. This makes the dark moon the perfect phase under which to plan the ‘what’s next’ in our lives. Then the next night, the new moon brings us the opportunity to intend new beginnings and fresh starts.”*

And here before you stands a door. The door to a brand new chapter in your life. The door to the unknown.

An opportunity is coming your way and very very soon if not today! It may feel just as daunting as the image in the card above. Two big, solid, heavy doors, looking old as time itself. But do you see the Light there, shining from just above them? A positive sign for sure!

The opportunity coming to you is the right one, you must take it. You will know in your heart that it is safe to open the doors. Trust your gut. Heed your intuition. Do not seek advice this time, trust only in yourself and follow your inner guidance.

These doors are heavy, and as sure as they will open to you, the will surely shut securely after you pass through them. This is absolutely necessary. The door opens and then shuts. The future opens to you, the past recedes. The opportunity comes, then passes if we do not take it. There is so much power in the decision before you.

Choose wisely.

Do not fear the unknown

Games ~ Ludi: “Games should be aboveboard and full of fun. They should never be underhanded, covert, mean-spirited, or harmful in any way. If someone is playing a strategic game against you, understand it for what it is – indeed, a game – and change the rules to suit yourself. Seek the light-hearted company of others. A celebration will soon be announced.

“A lighter heart is sometimes apt,
When a game between two is played.
One gets to know the other a little better,
And opinions may be changed or swayed.

But games too can be wild and dark,
Hiding what is and what will be.
Battered and bruised he way might go,
And winning bring no guarantee.”

It was said that Diana’s witches and those who were devoted to Aradia gathered annually for games – running games, horse racing, and other sports, as well as games of chance – and the celebration of a Sabbath. This could be wishful thinking on behalf of storytellers – imagine how delightful, hundreds of women dancing and gaming! – Or it could be marvellously true. However, women questioned independently described a setting where games were played and the rites to Diana were performed too.

And the place where they gathered? Well, it may have been an actual geographic location. Mention of the Italian city of Benevento recurs in the depositions, and so it was believed that this was the center of the games of the witches. However, in many depositions it also says,”they flew here” (brooms were optional!), so they may have met in a realm to which they traveled in trance. But wherever it occurred, the Sabbath gatherings were repeated each year and looked forward to by all witches in the spirit of friendship and love.

We see the shadow side of game playing in those games in which someone gets hurt – not physically hurt, but mentally or emotionally. Mind games that are played to belittle or bully someone else – or to make us feel better about ourselves at another’s expense – are not about enjoyment or even competition. Instead, they are about abuse of power. There is a deep seated problem with bullying and negative game playing, both amongst young people in schools and between co-workers within corporate environments. We need to attend to this issue and learn why this abusive pattern persists.”*

~ By Stacey Demarco

Where are games being played in your life right now? Maybe someone is playing you… maybe you have a feeling that you are being played but you are not sure. Maybe you are trying to deal with an issue in a strategic way, in an effort to remain on top of the situation. Only you know how games are being played out, and only you can be the one to make sure that no one is getting hurt. It may mean that you need to listen more closely to your intution… is it telling you that something is not quite right? Or it may be that you have to listen to your conscience… are you really coming from a place of integrity or are you manipulating someone to get what you want?

Whatever the situation may be, the message here is that we cannot live a life of authenticity if we are playing games. We cannot be true to ourselves if we are allowing ourselves to be played. This is of the old, competitive, lack mentality. It is of the old limited ways of thinking. It comes from trying to outwit others to put ourselves at the top of the hierarchy. These ways must be left behind in order to embrace the New Consciousness. The Consciousness of Unconditional Love.

For how can we manipulate or be manipulated in the face of Unconditional Love? How can we be our pure, undiluted and perfect selves? How can we come to a place of Divine Wisdom and uncompromised Truth? It simply cannot be.

Drop the mind games and open your heart to your situation. Maybe you need to let go of someone or something that is toxic to you. Maybe it is time to alter the direction of your life path to find a healthier perspective. Bless and release the games and step boldly into your truth. Demand the very same integrity from others that you courageously offer them.

Play games with your pets, your kids. Make sure they are uplifting, heart centered and fun. These are the only games to lovingly partake in.

Resistance: “Obstantia”

When you feel resistance, your intention is alerting you to something that requires your attention. We often resist when something seems unethical or unjust. Are you resisting exactly what you need as a way to punish yourself or keep yourself small? Stop procrastinating.

The bell of resistance,

It tolls inside my head,

And floods my body through.

It awakens me, my fears to shed.

It starts with a small stone,

The one hard-hearted,

The small push back

Into places uncharted.

Many of us do not consciously consider our values until they are tested or challenged. Then we feel a quite natural resistance to the event or person who has crossed what we see as an ethical line or who has acted contrary to a principle we hold dear. This kind of resistance is a message and offers us the chance to take action, to right the wrong doing or address the violation of our boundaries.

Resistance can be hard to shift if it is directly linked with our values and in reality, it may well be our values that need to change. We may need to understand that we are being inflexible in our views and that we need to take a less extreme approach sometimes for our happiness and the happiness of others.

Procrastination is born of fear and is another kind of resistance – a resistance to moving forward with something, even if the change may benefit us.

In Aradia’s time, real tyranny existed and many resisted the iron-handed oppression that was so prevalent. Whilst we may never have experienced such a dire situation, in the face of so much cruelty and repression, sometimes the only way to exert influence was to quietly curse someone in power. If this is someone’s only hops, their only kind of power, we may understand this kind of act. Rebelling against a negative status quo is an act of the brave and is something that is very much part of our human history. Things cannot be changed without some kind of resistance to “what is.”

~ By Stacey Demarco

Something in your life requires your immediate attention and action is necessary in order to move forward. Only you know what this is. Yes, that… whatever popped into your head just now, that is most likely it. Have you been avoiding it? Feeling stuck or too indecisive? Well this is the sign you have been waiting for! Move forward now!

Sometimes we sit on the fence for too long, weighing our options, feeling a measure of safety in stagnancy. We feel that if we stay on the fence we are leaving our options open, but what we are actually doing is missing options that we are unaware of being that we are stuck up there on that fence. Shift your perspective, take life by the horns and get in the game, before you miss out!

Opportunity has been knocking, it’s time to hop down off that fence and open the door.

You will be glad you did!
