Letting Go: “Offering a Way Out”
“Truly loving another means letting go of all expectations. It means full acceptance, even celebration of another’s personhood.”
~ Karen Casey
“Have the courage to set it free, if it flies away it was never truly yours. If it returns of its own free will, then you know for sure it was yours.
Such is the old adage regarding a loved one. To truly love and be loved, love has to be given and returned freely and unconditionally.
This image captures that moment of release. Will the butterfly return or leave through the open window? It is a poignant moment and one of courage for the girl who has released the butterfly but is herself a prisoner. Her scenario is symbolically represented by the chess pieces. The analogy of imprisonment can of course be applied to self-incarceration. We are often prisoners trapped in a cell of our own making, either by fear, perceptions of duty or loyalty to causes or people. Whether caring for a loved one or feeling trapped by financial, medical or any other such circumstances can represent an emotional imprisonment as real as any barred window.”*

Sometimes the hardest thing we can do is set someone we love free. We want to cling on for dear life, lest they drift too far from us. We want to smother them with our love to show them just how much we feel for them. And yet this suffocates them and can send them running. It could be a child or a romantic partner, the feelings of wanting to be close to that person can be overwhelming and filled with projections and expectations.
Yet the greatest gift we can give them is our trust and show them our unconditional love. The best way we can show our ultimate love for them is to set them free.
Many believe that when someone is given too much freedom they will abandon ship; be unfaithful, or find someone else to be with. Yet when someone is feeling trapped, that is more likely when they seek refuge with another. And quite honestly, if they are the type of person who is going to take advantage of freedom and trust, and betray you, they will do it no matter how hard you cling on to them. You cannot control another, no matter how hard you try. And the tighter you hold, the more they will want to wriggle free.
Just let them go. Let them experience life on their terms. Free and happy. Find peace within yourself and control your own reality, and let others control theirs. In this way you will earn their respect instead of demanding it. You will earn their trust and you will allow them to be exactly who they are. And if they leave you over it, then there will be space in your life for someone new.
Release the fear and let go. Let yourself go too. Whatever you feel holds you back from truly enjoying life, release it all. And trust that what is yours will always come to you. Nothing can stop it.

Thank you Dee, this really made a difference today as I keep finding myself holding on even after she is gone and I am angry and resentful and sad. I see that I am keeping myself bound up in that.
I love the kitten, the new life…
